Wild Camping Rules in Europe

Wild camping rules in Europe vary by country, but wild camping can be a great experience when you respect nature and local laws.

Before you stay overnight in nature, always check what is allowed.

Wild Camping and Local Rules

Wild camping is not the same in every country.

In some countries it is allowed in certain areas. In other countries it is not allowed at all.

Campscout helps you find beautiful places in nature. But the law always comes first.

What is allowed depends on the country, the region, and sometimes even the exact spot.

Always check the local rules before you stay overnight.

Restrictions in Europe

Where wild camping is mostly not allowed

In many European countries, wild camping is not allowed outside official campsites.

This often includes:

  • The Netherlands

  • Belgium

  • Germany

  • France

  • Italy

  • Spain

  • Portugal

  • Austria

  • Switzerland

  • England & Wales (with limited exceptions)

In these countries, you can usually only stay overnight:

  • On official campsites

  • With permission from the landowner

  • In designated camper areas

If you ignore the rules, you may receive a fine.

Access rules

Where wild camping is more flexible

In some countries, wild camping is allowed in certain situations.

This includes Scotland, Norway, Sweden and Finland. Even in these countries, local rules still apply.

You cannot camp close to houses, in protected nature areas, along roads, or during fire bans.

Access by car is often more restricted than access on foot.

Our approach

How Campscout shares locations

Campscout does not say whether a place is legal for overnight camping.

Locations are shared based on personal experiences.
They are not legal guarantees.

Some places are good for hiking, resting or exploring.
In some areas, staying overnight may be allowed.

It is your responsibility to check the local rules.

Using Campscout does not mean camping is allowed.
It means you found a place that might be worth visiting.

Respecting the rules is part of responsible travel.
